Money decisions deserve information you can check. This page explains how PAYATE News chooses, researches, writes, updates and corrects its articles.

Our standards

  • Useful first. Each guide opens with a short, direct answer, then explains the details, the exceptions and what to do next.
  • Accurate and sourced. Figures such as fees, limits, thresholds, interest rates and legal rules are checked against primary sources and linked in the article.
  • Clear about uncertainty. If an official source is unclear, unavailable or in the middle of changing, we say so rather than guess.
  • Independent. Advertisers and companies we write about do not choose our topics, review articles before publication or pay for favourable coverage.

How we research

We rely on sources in roughly this order:

  1. Laws, regulations and official guidance from governments and regulators (for example GOV.UK, the FCA, the CFPB, IRCC, the European Banking Authority and national tax and immigration authorities).
  2. Rules and documentation published by card networks, payment schemes and industry bodies.
  3. Official pages and documentation from the companies whose products we explain, such as fee schedules and terms.
  4. Reputable data releases and reports, such as central bank, statistics office and industry fraud statistics.

We avoid relying on unsourced claims, forum posts or other blogs for facts. Where a figure applies from a specific date or only in certain countries, we say so.

How we write

  • Articles show a "last reviewed" date and a list of sources.
  • Examples that use invented numbers are labelled as hypothetical.
  • We explain when a guide does not apply to certain readers, countries or situations.
  • We do not publish fake reviews, fabricated quotes or invented statistics.
  • We use digital tools, including AI-assisted tools, for tasks such as research support, drafting and checking. A person reviews what is published, and every factual claim must trace back to a source we can link to.

Updates

Financial rules change often. We review guides when official sources change and when readers report problems, and we update the "last reviewed" date when a guide is checked. Older news articles describe events at the time of publication and may not reflect later developments.

Corrections

If we publish something inaccurate, we correct it as soon as we can confirm the right information. Significant corrections, such as a wrong fee, date or eligibility rule, are made in the article itself. To report an error, use our contact page and, if possible, include a link to an official source.

Advertising and independence

The site is funded by advertising served through Google AdSense. Ads are placed automatically and are separate from our editorial content. We do not accept payment to publish or change articles. If we ever publish sponsored or affiliate content, it will be clearly labelled as such.

Not personal advice

Our content is general information, not personal financial, legal, tax or immigration advice. See our Disclaimer for details.
